The wiring on a VW van or bus can be very simple.  This is particularly true of older models (mid
1960′s and earlier).

There is no reason to feel intimidated by some ol’ wires.

For example, there is one wire leading to each set of bulbs in the tail lights.  Each one of
the bulbs has two leads, one to one of these wires and one to ground.  Electrically
speaking, very simple.  Practically as well.  There is no way to achieve the same effect
with fewer wires.

Expanding on the above scheme a little further, there is one wire running to the left and
right set of brake lights, one wire running to the left and right set of turn signal lights
and one wire running to the back up lights.  It doesn’t get much simpler.

A word about the ground wires.  As in all cases of ground wires, they must connect to
completely bare, bright, shiny metal.  After the connection is made, then and only then
should you think about protecting the joint with grease.

After making a ground connection, you can protect the joint from moisture, dirt and general crud by slathering the joint with grease.  You don’t need a bunch, just cover the whole area and the connector.

The grease trick is especially important if the joint carries a lot of current or one side
of the connection is a metal that corrodes.  Usually if the wire looks like it’s bigger than
the average wire, it carries a lot of current and is a good candidate for a really good
connection followed by grease.

Generally, anywhere on the body is metal that corrodes (in this case, rusts)
On old VWs, there are virtually no semiconductors to worry about.  The early fuel injection
computers are an exception to this rule.

They became available in the late 60′s.  A factoid that I can’t get over is that the lowly VW was the world’s first production car to offer EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection) as standard equipment.  But EFI is a whole other subject…

As long as your only concern is on a non-EFI VW bus, you’re all set.

This 1965 VW Transporter van is the Who Magic Bus which was part of an international competition to raise money for the UK Charity Teenage Cancer Trust which raised about 40,000 lbs. if I remember correctly.  Someone please correct me if I’m wrong.

This split screen van was autographed by Daltry which would be cool on any van I guess. The band’s art director is the one who came up with the unique design.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles in association with the Who is what really made this happen.  There was also a live performance in celebration of 60 years of the VW van in Germany.

Maybe this will be an inspiration for the Beach Boys to come out with a model, you never know…

In trying to outfit your own van as a camper, you are bound to overlook something. Finding a Westfalia for sale will get you what you need, but (more importantly) knowledgeable experience is built right in and known to work. Why try to reinvent the wheel?

The topic of heating has long been seen as an area that could use improvement on older VWs. This is definitely not true of water cooled models and campers with auxiliary heaters.

The furniture in a camper is uniquely useful. It is designed and laid out for that vehicle, so everything is guaranteed to fit and make efficient use of space.

Fun at the beach, not crazy about the color but it’s sweet:

The fridge can be a godsend. If it is a LPG/Gas model, then you have little to worry about and need only to fill it and turn it on.

The stove is the place you’ll cook those remote money saving meals. Very little here to break or foul up.

A sink is a real boon. If you cook your own meals (and why wouldn’t you?), you’ll need a place to clean up. The sink comes to the rescue.

In addition to the pop tops and zillion storage bin cabinets, there were also various tents available specifically for the camper. These are pitched right beside the parked camper and are contoured to sidle up to the opened side door(s).

Tents provide a great expansion of the available room. One such model even includes a ‘privy’ section (a separate small ventilated room for a toilet). How’s that for being at home in the wild?
